Intermedia

In the early years of Intermedia at Iowa many artists participated in the visiting artists’ programme which involved artists such as Hans Haacke, Allan Kaprow and Robert Wilson working on site and including Intermedia students within the development of new work. Vito Acconci covered Hans Breder’s sabbatical in 1976 and in Anti-Academy we include a monologue by the artist which was his parting address to the students.

Teaching at Intermedia Iowa put emphasis on site-specific workshops that took place within the city, surrounding landscape and during an annual group study visit to Mexico. Students Ana Mendieta and Charles Ray participated in these workshops. Elaine Summers, a pioneer of intermedia art, merged film and dance during her association with the Judson Dance Theater in the 1960s. Summers first worked with Intermedia students in 1973, developing site-specific dance pieces in various locations within the city. Mary Beth Edelson ran a site-specific workshop in 1977 utilising the context of the surrounding landscape and corn fields. Pages from Edelson’s ‘Script Books’ expose the development of her ideas during the workshop through the participation of students and her photographs record the various stages of Cornstalk Spiral and Fire Flights in Deep Space: Nurturing.

Video and photographic works by student Richard Bloes, and the video record of a workshop presentation by student Mike Eilenfeldt are seen alongside slide documentation of workshop materials and ephemera from the Intermedia archive.
